Early Life and Education
In 1914, Heimito von Doderer enrolled in the law faculty of the University of Vienna.
A year later, he was conscripted into the Austrian army and fought on the Galician Front during World War I. In 1916, he was captured by the Russian army and sent to a labor camp near Krasnoyarsk.
Literary Beginnings and Academic Pursuits
Following his release from captivity in 1920, Doderer returned to Vienna and made his literary debut in 1923 with the poetry collection "Streets and Landscapes." He actively contributed to various Viennese newspapers and earned a doctorate in history in 1925.
