As Diane Elizabeth Lord, she was born at Spooner Row, Wymondham, Norfolk on 10 June 1957, daughter of Colin Francis Lord (born 7 March 1935) and his wife Phyllis Elizabeth née Gent (13 April 1938-15 January 2010), who married at Wymondham Abbey in 1956, two years after Dee's birth they moved to the adjoining village of Wattlefield.
From an early age Dee, as she is known, found excitement, challenge, and escapism in making and looking at art and decided that she wished to become an artist and in 1962 won a Prize in the Brooke Bond National School Art Competition with her painting 'The Market Place' and again in 1967 for 'Stone Henge'.

Dee attended Wymondham Secondary School for Girls taking 'O' Level Art in 1972 making posters and cards. On leaving school Dee worked in the local Briton Brush Factory and in 1974 married James William Nickerson (born 1953) and now paints under the name of Dee Nickerson, they had one daughter.
