A A rare and important Indonesian andesite stone figure of a Buddha
Central Java, 9th Century
Seated in sattvasana on a double-lotus base with his left hand in dhyana mudra, his other arm held to the front and originally exhibiting the vitarka or varada mudra, the slender figure wearing a close-fitting sanghati leaving his right shoulder bare and falling in rhythmic folds to the center front, further stylized folds featured on the short folded stole resting over the left shoulder, his serene face framed by a coiffure of large circular curls continuing over the domed usnisa and backed by a triangular support partially overlapping a open mandorla carved with a distinctive relief pattern of stylized foliate-inspired motifs edged by an outer border of flames (jvala).
